FIT/Micro FIT Programs

Investing in Green Energy Makes Sense

The Government of Ontario is committed to the investment and growth of a Green Economy with a goal of becoming a world leader in renewable energy production. To initiate this goal, the Green Energy Act was passed into law in 2009, introducing incredible opportunities for average Ontarians to actively participate in the renewable energy market for the first time. Now, with a reasonable investment, property and business owners are seeing guaranteed returns through 20 year contracts with the Ontario Power Authority's Feed in Tariff (FIT) programs.

Ontario is stepping up to be a leader in renewable energy. The province's Green Energy Act is part of Ontario's long term plan to support environmental sustainability for a cleaner and brighter future.

Solar generating through the Ontario Power Authority's Feed-in Tariff (FIT) program is an exciting opportunity for farmers, property owners and businesses to produce green electricity to sell back to the power grid. The FIT guarantees specific rates for energy generated from renewable sources, making it more affordable and accessible for regular Ontarians to invest in the environment.

Clean and green energy will secure the environmental future for the next generation.

Why you should consider solar:

Micro FIT Program (for projects 10 kW and less)

If you are a homeowner with at least 500 square feet of south facing roof, or own a piece of property that does not abut residential property you may find the MicroFIT program is right for you.

Need a new roof or an upgrade to support the panels, no problem our installers are well experienced at this type of work and we can do that at the same time. As part of a rooftop project we have our engineer complete an analysis of your roof to ensure that it is capable of accommodating the panels and will last past the life of the contract.

The microFIT program provides an ideal opportunity for individuals such as property owners, farmers and municipalities, to name a few (see the complete eligibility list here) who want to install a small rooftop or ground mounted solar system of 10 kW or under. Once installed and connected to the grid, the microFIT program will pay owners a 20 year fixed contract rate for all the electricity your system produces. Rates are established by the Ontario Power Authority at the end of each calendar year and are designed for owners to recover their original investment and earn a reasonable return on investment over the 20 year contract term.

Depending upon your specific location a 10 kW fixed system can produce approximately 12,500 kW/year and a dual axis tracker about 40 - 45 % more. There is no application fee for the microFIT program, and if down the road you decide to sell your property, your microFIT contract can also be sold with the property and the contract transferred to the new owner.

FIT Program (for projects larger than 10 kW)

The FIT program is for systems over 10 kW in size and can be ideally suited for large commercial and agricultural building rooftops.

FIT is a program where everyone wins. After only three years, the program is proving its success. In a recent report from the Ministry of Energy, it says that more than 2,500 medium and large FIT projects have been approved which will generate enough electricity to power 1.2 million homes, putting the province well on-track to reach its goal of reducing green house gases, phasing out coal-fired generation to improve air quality by 2014. Net Metering Program

The Net Metering program is available to any electricity customer who generates electricity, primarily for their own use, from renewable energy technologies such as wind and solar.

Ontario's Net metering program allows you to send electricity generated back to the electrical grid for credit toward your electricity cost. As a green energy producer your utility will subtract the value of electricity you supply to the grid from the value of what you take from the grid. As the result you will see the 'net' difference between those two amounts on your utility bill.

If you supply more power than what you take from the grid over the billing cycle, you'll receive a credit toward future energy bills. The credit can be carried forward for up to 12 months.
